This is one of the most common questions I encounter. The answer of course depends on how you conduct business, more importantly how you charge for your services.

The most accurate answer is “yes”. However, most people asking this question are really asking about a physical machine located at the place of business. With the advent of technology, most businesses can accept credit card transactions with the assistance of virtual terminals such as internet portals or automated voice response systems. These are convenient, secure and relatively inexpensive. The main drawback to these terminals are the higher costs of processing card-not-present transactions which involve more risk to both consumers and businesses.  Think more risk, more (higher) rate. For some businesses, this is the only option but make sure you understand HOW MUCH MORE you will be paying. Review your costs often, preferably with the assistance of a trained professional (like me :) )

The least expensive transactions to process are card present or “swiped” transactions, especially debit cards either with or without a pin. In order to process these you will need a physical machine to capture the data. While these can include devices that can attach to your computer, Point of Sale terminal or register, the safest and still the most cost effective method is though the use of a stand-alone credit card terminal.  Again, these vary in price and feature, so be sure you are getting the correct terminal for you needs.

As always, I am here to assist and answer any questions you may have.
